The Avalanche Research Group at the University of British Columbia involves research in and collaboration between the Department of Geography and the Department of Civil Engineering. Research is carried out on a range of topics, including:
- Interaction of avalanches with forest cover
- Effects of logging cutblocks on avalanche activity
- Avalanche forecasting and prediction
- Decision support tools for avalanche forecasting in mechanized skiing operations, highways maintenance programs, and backcountry recreation
- Snow and avalanche mechanics, including fracture mechanics of slab avalanche release
- Dynamics of avalanche flow and runout
- Statistical and physical prediction of extreme avalanche runout and destructive potential
